Giving Back and Expanding Horizons through Volunteer Research

With the added leisure time that comes in retirement, many seek out fresh ways to broaden their horizons.

A new research laboratory at Harvard University offers a great opportunity to do just that. The Harvard Digital Lab for the Social Sciences (DLABSS) gives people of all ages the chance to share their opinions on social science research questions.

Cutting-Edge Research Lab

DLABSS is a unique and growing community. It has hosted over 130 studies, netting over 90,000 individual survey responses. Right now, there are more than 25,000 volunteers who respond to surveys on DLABSS. They come from all over the world, including all 50 U.S. states and numerous countries across the globe.

DLABSS is a novel research opportunity. The lab harnesses the power of the internet to make social science accessible to a broad audience.

It is easy to sign up for DLABSS from the comfort of your home. All it takes is an email address and a few minutes. Once you’ve signed up, you will receive a biweekly email with an opportunity to participate in a new online survey conducted by a researcher at Harvard University.

A Learning Experience

Respondents on DLABSS have noted how rewarding participation is. First, DLABSS exposes participants to cutting-edge academic research surveys from a number of different fields.

DLABSS offers a free, online platform for volunteers from across the world to participate in and learn from groundbreaking social science experiments.

Some topics on which you can currently take surveys include Social Security, religion in America, and gun control. Most surveys take about 5 minutes to complete, and you have the option to skip any survey you don’t want to take.

One DLABSS volunteer, Kimi, has stated, “Whatever survey you start with will more than likely cause you to think in a new light… You may learn something new about yourself.” Another DLABSS participant, Alex G. writes, “The best feature of DLABSS is that it opens up social science research to a [new] group of people.”

DLABSS volunteers have indicated that DLABSS is a great way to pass the time and helps them think critically about the world around them.

A Fulfilling Way to Give Back

DLABSS also provides a way to volunteer or “give back” from the comfort of the home. Research on critical issues like immigration, Medicare programs, and corruption is often costly to conduct, especially given the shrinking availability of public funding and grants.

DLABSS reduces the financial barriers to conducting research so that undergraduate and graduate students can get survey responses.

Bobby N., a previous DLABSS volunteer, comments, “It was easy and quick, and I know that those responses are valuable data to researchers.”

Be Part of a Community

By volunteering with DLABSS, you support a unique online lab that helps researchers who are passionate about the social sciences. You get to learn about new topics by taking surveys from your own home and on your own time.

When you take your first survey, you will be asked to provide some basic background information about yourself for researchers to use in analyzing their data. Your information remains private. Your responses and your email address will never be shared outside of the research lab.

Once you have taken one survey, you are enrolled in the study panel and will receive biweekly opportunities to participate on new topics. Periodically, DLABSS even holds raffles for gift cards and other prizes as a way to thank its volunteers for participating.

Emergency Disaster Tips for Seniors

Since peak hurricane season extends from mid-August to the end of October, FEMA suggests older adults stay prepared by having emergency plans in place.

Weather patterns have become increasingly unpredictable, and the hurricane season has just launched, so if you live in a high risk area, here’s what you need to do.

Create a support network of family, friends, neighbors, community or faith-based organizations, human service providers and others who can help before and after an emergency or disaster. Discuss your needs with the trusted support network before a catastrophe occurs, since they bring loss of power, cell phone service and dangerous road conditions. Or call the non-emergency phone number for the police department and ask them to do a well-being check.

  • Check on your neighbors regularly.
  • Expect that you may not have access to a medical facility or a drugstore during an emergency, so have an adequate supply of needed medications and other supplies that you use regularly – create a “to go” bag.
  • If you use medical equipment that requires electrical power, ask your doctor or health care provider how to prepare for its use during a power outage.
  • Be sure to stay informed and sign up for local alerts and warnings.
  • Learn how, contact your local emergency management agency or office. Visit the Red Cross App store to download free smart phone apps that keep you informed.

 

Figure out an evacuation route in case you need to relocate before, during or after an emergency. Determine how to leave home safely, where to go and what the best route is.

Listen to the radio or TV for advice about whether to evacuate or remain in place. Also, figure out the safest way to shelter in place during an extreme weather event. Practice the evacuation or shelter-in-place drill every six months.

Create a portable emergency supply kit that’s easily carried of rolled. Supply the kit with a three-day supply of medications, non-perishable foods, and water, medical devices, flashlight and batteries, personal hygiene items and chargers for cell phones.

Make copies of important documents and place them in a waterproof bag for safekeeping to include medical insurance card, a photo ID, power of attorney documents, a list of allergies and health conditions, a list of all medications, and contact information for family members, doctors and caregivers. Keep the bag in a place that’s easy to grab it before evacuating.

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. Labor Day Legislation

Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”
But Peter McGuire’s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. Who do you think is the founder?

How to Deal with Adult Bullies

When people think of bullies, they often think of kids on playgrounds. But, the truth is that adult bullying is a real problem. Verbal bullying doesn’t end as we get older. Individuals continue to use bullying, at every age, to feel powerful over another person.

Verbal Adult Bullying

Despite the sticks and stones saying, words can be hurtful. Too often, adult bullies try to make themselves feel more important or dominant by using language that is demeaning. It can be incredibly hurtful to the person on the receiving end and can even lead to issues with anxiety and depression.

Sometimes the bully themselves are hurting and in need of care. Some adults have difficulty controlling their emotions. So, if they are experiencing anxiety and fear, they lash out. In these instances the bullying may be unintentional but it can still be incredibly harmful.

Covert bullying is also a reality. This type of bullying can be harder to identify because it is more subtle than more outwardly aggressive forms of bullying, but it still exists. If someone is making harmful jokes at another’s expense or is intentionally hurting someone with social exclusion or embarrassment, it can have the same effects as overt forms of bullying.

What to Do About Adult Bullies

Usually bullies are picking on others they see as weaker so it’s important to stand up for yourself. Of course, this can be difficult to do. This may be particularly true if the bully is a family member, friend, or caregiver. These close relationships are not immune to toxic behavior.

There are different types of bullying and instances of this toxic behavior can happen in a variety of places within a variety of relationships. You can learn more about where it happens and how to respond by talking through the situation and doing research on the behavior. To learn more about why you are feeling how you are feeling, reach out for help.

And remember, you can not change another person or their behavior but you can take steps to protect yourself. If the bullying is happening in a workplace or structured environment, report the behavior. If it is happening in a domestic situation, let your situation be known by a trusted friend, confident, or counselor.

Recovering from an Adult Bully

If you find you are having trouble sleeping or are experiencing anxiety as a result of a bullying relationship, look into counseling to learn how to cope with the impacts of bullying. The impacts of these toxic relationship are real and unhealthy. It is important you take care of your own wellbeing and move away from the relationship.

Often, combining healthy lifestyle changes—from meditation to exercise—with professional counseling can help individuals to improve their quality of life in the aftermath of an experience with a bully.

Conversation Tips for Seniors in Social Settings

Einstein, it is rumored, was once seated beside Marilyn Monroe at a dinner party. “Oh, Mr. Einstein,” she cooed, “with your brains and my looks, we could have perfect children.” The physicist paused for a moment and then asked, “But what if they had your brains and my looks?” Party and playful questions aside, there is no doubt that social settings sometimes require us to have good answers. And sometimes, they require us to ask good questions.

Albert Einstein had more to say about questions. He encouraged us to “learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing,” he reminded us, “is not to stop questioning.” And he’s not the only one to share thoughts about questions. We find two brilliant men—one a theoretical physicist; the other, “The Father of Modern Management Science”—echoing one another’s thoughts. Einstein exhorted us, “The important thing is not to stop questioning.” And Peter Drucker, the genius born 30 years later, reminded us that exceptional people “know how to ask questions—the right questions.”

THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Which questions are the right ones? Those that probe beneath the surface—either initially or subsequently. These questions expand upon an answer that’s been given. They create “spiralized” thinking—viz., the kind of thinking that refuses to accept a monosyllabic answer. Instead, these questions don’t create verbal dead-ends. (As Voltaire observed so many years ago, we should “judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.”)

Here are examples of questions that elicit further thought by probing beneath the surface.

In conversation with your grandson:

Question: “Are you enjoying college?”

Answer: “It’s fine, I guess.”

The right follow-up question: “What constitutes the ‘guess’ part of your reply?”

When meeting a new person in a social setting:

“How are you today?”

Answer: “Fine, thank you.”

The right follow-up question: “What would make you finer?”

At a homeowners association meeting:

“We’re in agreement, then, that our next step is to notify residents of the increase in the monthly homeowner’s fee?”

Answers: “Yes,” (Silence and nonverbal nods are all interpreted as affirmative answers to the question.)

The right follow-up question: “How can we make news of the increase as painless as possible?”

At a holiday gathering with your family:

“So, what’s new since the last time I saw you?”

Answer: “Not much.”

The right follow-up question: “Well, tell me how the children are doing in school. Who is their favorite teacher?”

LET LOU COACH YOU

Without a doubt, there are gaps between the generations. But, even with people the same age, there can be conversational gaps, too. One way to close the gaps is to practice using the right questions. Once you’ve mastered the technique, you’ll find yourself enjoying interpersonal exchanges more as you learn about others and they, about you. To quote a legendary football player and coach, Lou Holtz, “I never learn anything talking. I only learn things when I ask questions.” Here’s to the learner in you.

Dealing with Life after Loss

When you are trying to cope, dealing with life after loss, it can be very, very difficult. When we lose someone close to us, particularly if it is a family member or a lifelong friend, the grief can be an exceptionally powerful force in our day-to-day lives.

While we can logically understand that loss is part of life, when we lose someone close, it can cause confusion, sadness, and depression. How each person copes with grief can differ, but typically time passing is what helps. But that time period may be months or even a year. There is no set time on how long the grieving process takes.

Accept that it will take time. While a supportive environment and taking care of yourself can help, you will need to adjust to the idea of the loss before you are able to accept your current situation and move forward. Talking to a counselor or other mental health professional can help.

Asking for Help When Dealing with Life After Loss

If you feel your grief is consuming you, know you are not alone. Many dealing with life after loss describe their sadness overtaking their whole lives, including their thoughts and emotions. Understand your feelings are adjusting, making sense of something that seemed impossible before.

Talking through your emotions can help. You don’t need to go through this alone. If a friend wants to bring over dinner and visit, try to take them up on it. If you are unable to talk with those closest to you, consider seeking professional help.

Be Present As You Heal

Living in the past and continually replaying memories in your mind can cause intense sadness. Particularly if you are worried about the future, too. Learn to live in the moment. Focus on the present.

To live your best each day, take care of yourself. Remember to eat well, get exercise, and stay on a consistent sleep schedule. Solid, healthy patterns are important. You may be tempted to dull your feelings with alcohol or other substances, but this will not help you heal. Turning off your emotions can even lead to it taking even longer for you to feel better again.

Get the help you need and recognize that your grief is yours. While it may be helpful to hear about or read about stages of grief or timelines of grief, know that you will move forward on your own path to healing.

You may be in the process of becoming a completely different person. Or, you are settling in to be happy as the person you’ve always known yourself to be. Either way, change can be very upsetting and you may resist it, but change can also be growth. When you are dealing with life after loss, be kind to yourself, and eventually, you will feel strong again.

Staying Social to keep Dementia at Bay

For years science has been building and ever-expanding body of evidence that staying social has benefits to those with Alzheimer’s and other memory impairing diseases. Along with exercise (and sometimes incorporated directly with it), social interactions may be one of the best and easiest ways to help individuals facing the challenges with dementia. Released by The Lancet Neurology in 2006, a study titled “The effect of social networks on the relation between Alzheimer’s disease pathology and level of cognitive function” showed a relation between social network size and cognitive function in Alzheimer’s disease. Similarly, a 2008 study published in the American Journal of Public Health titled ”Social network, cognitive function, and dementia incidence among elderly women” showed evidence that larger social networks have a protective influence on cognitive function in elderly women.
So what does this mean in a practical sense?
Individuals in the early stages of dementia should be encouraged to engage with others in a social setting as much as possible. As a part of the Nexus at Silverado® program, this is put into practice through resident engagements like social clubs (cooking, crafts, etc.) and volunteer events to help people (and animals!) in need.
Often times these engaging activities are combined with physical activities such as walking groups or Tai Chi, layering on the benefits of exercise and stress reduction (also science-based Nexus activities). The underlying benefit to all of these activities is staving off the isolation and depression that often come with dementia, as they can exacerbate symptoms.
Community centers, churches and civic organizations are all great places to find activities for your loved one and yourself, offering meet-ups, day trips, crafts and other great ways to stay social. There aren’t many better ways to have fun and do something beneficial!

Another amazing way to keep your neurons firing is learning new technology. While it can be scary to learn how to use something new, it’s super great for your brain.
Technology doesn’t just give you a new learning challenge. Getting the newest smartphone or tablet gives you unlimited access and connection to your loved ones.
Getting familiar with learning technology and being flexible not only helps your mind but gives you a direct connection to your entire family.

What If Dementia Has Already Begun?

Even if you or a loved one are in the beginning stages of dementia these strategies can still help.
Focusing on engaging activities for the brain is a great place to start for continuous learning.
Even cooking and basic household cleaning can help an aging brain. These activities require many levels of brain activity to be successful. Encourage whoever is suffering to do all they can.

5 Secrets to Building Up Your Neuroplasticity

Why is this important?
Like any other muscle in your body, when it comes to your brain, you either use it or lose it. To keep your cognition strong and to help set yourself up for successful aging, it’s important to create growth experiences for yourself that build up your neuroplasticity.
That’s why I’ve gathered these five secrets to help you build up your neuroplasticity:

1. Set meaningful goals

Too often I meet seniors who’ve lived a life of duty, where they dedicated their lives to the hustle bustle of work, family and responsibilities. This is a completely honorable commitment.
The main fallback is… your dream list of meaningful goals oftentimes gets trapped in a hope chest and by the time retirement hits, maybe you’ve not only lost sight of your dream list but you’ve also lost interest in creating meaningful challenges for yourself.
One of the ways to increase your neuroplasticity is to create new and exciting challenges for yourself, and the way to create new and exciting challenges for yourself is to set meaningful goals.
What’s the best way to set meaningful goals?
Find clarity through some serious self-reflection. This can really help you uncover some of the passions that you have deep inside you, which ultimately can help create some of your most vibrant new neural pathways in your brain.

2. Adopt a growth mindset

Once you have your meaningful goals, a powerful way to chase them and to keep your brain activated is to adopt a growth mindset.
A growth mindset is based on Dr. Carol Dweck’s idea that you can “grow your brain’s capacity to learn and solve problems.” It’s a perspective that believes you’re not born either smart or not-so-smart, but instead you’re born with the ability to learn.
The hard part?
It takes work. A critical ingredient of adopting a growth mindset is to embrace challenge. When we’re faced with any pitfalls and “fails” in life, especially when we’re willing to try something new and exciting, it’s easy to give up and run away from any challenges or roadblocks.
If you can learn the skill of learning and train yourself to look forward to those hard and challenging moments, you’ll be that much more likely to accomplish any of your personal goals.
Some more tips on developing a growth mindset:

  • Focus on the process and not the outcome– if you can get in the habit of enjoying the journey, you’ll be less focused on the destination, which in turn will allow your brain to better engage in the act of learning
  • Seek constructive criticism and not opinions– it’s a tough thing to let go of approval from others, but if you can instead learn to seek constructive feedback from other people, you’ll likely be more drawn to the learning process
  • Create a new goal for every goal that you complete– this’ll keep you in the mindset of lifelong learning and can help you continue to engage your brain over and over again in the long-term

3. Tackle your goals using micro-steps

A powerful way to accomplish any goal is to break it down into smaller chunks I like to call micro-steps. This does four promising things for you:

  • It keeps you less overwhelmed by the big picture goal
  • It makes your goal more achievable and realistic
  • You’ll know exactly what to tackle next
  • It builds up your momentum and nurtures a habit of working consistently toward your goal

The most important takeaway from using micro-steps is that you want to get in the habit of being consistent in tackling each one. In order to make lasting changes in your brain pattern, you need to be diligent about giving yourself a learning process. Continue to challenge yourself on a regular basis. If setting and achieving new meaningful goals can become habitual, that’s when the neuroplasticity magic can happen for you.

4. Be self-aware and mindful

According to Roberts Wesleyan College, you make nearly 35,000 decisions a day, which means a ton of those decisions are made while your brain is on autopilot. If you can learn to engage the decision-making part of your brain, your prefrontal cortex, you can increase your neuroplasticity.
A way to do this is to practice mindfulness so that you’re more self-aware and more likely to make value-based(vs autopilot) decisions throughout the day.
Researchers Bas Verplanken and Rob Holland found that people make value-based choices only when those values are cognitively activated.
Some ideas on how to practice mindfulness:

  • Meditate, practice yoga or do breathing exercises
  • Connect with nature and be more aware of your physical surroundings
  • Keep a journal and write about things you’re grateful for
  • Exercise regularly
  • Spend less time on digital devices and social media
  • Watch less TV

5. Align your social circle with growth experiences

Your circle of influence is everything when it comes to how your daily habits are impacted. You become who you most spend time with so be sure to align your social circle with your personal goals and good habits.
There are stats that highlight the power of association, like these:

  • If your friend is obese, you’re 57% more likely to gain weight
  • If your friend gets a divorce, your chance for divorce goes up by 75%

By surrounding yourself with like-minded people who care about the same meaningful things that you do, you’re much more likely to continue to conquer your goals and expand your growth experiences. This is what’ll keep your neuroplasticity built-up and strong.
Tip: Spend less time with people in your area of concern, which is the area that highlights negativity, gossip, the news, the stock market, drama, regrets, fear, etc.
So there you have it – five practical tactics that’ll help you build up your brain health and neuroplasticity.
